This high-quality pen-type, 1mW, red fiber optic break, Visual Fault Locator (VFL) is specially designed for field personnel who need an efficient and economical tool for fiber tracing, fiber routing and continuity checking in optical networks. It finds breakpoints, poor connections, bending or cracking in fiber optic cables. This visual fault locator can find faults in an OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) dead zone and is used for end-to-end visual fiber identification. Faults can be easily identified by selecting a continuous wave or flashing output mode that illuminates the fault. An integrated universal 2.5 mm adapter allows easy connection to SC, ST, and FC connectors. LC and MU connectors require a 2.5mm to 1.25mm adapter. 

Visual Fault Locators come in many shapes and sizes. Some look like pens, some are built into OTDRs, and some even look like small test equipment boxes. There are two types of visual fault locators contact and non-contact.

A visual fault locator tool helps diagnose fiber optic connectivity issues through fiber optic cables or fiber optic cable pigtails. A visual fault locator fills the core of an optical fiber with light from a laser and then the light exits the fiber at a breakpoint or macro bend and typically illuminates a buffer surrounding the fiber. Macro bends are not always visible through the cladding but are usually visible through the buffer. Cracks may be visible through the jacket of a fiber optic cable, depending on jacket color, thickness, number of optical fibers in the cable, and amount of strength members.
