These Variable Optical Attenuators can be terminated with multiple connectors including, SC, SC/APC, ST, FC, FC/APC, LC, AND LC/APC.  This is an incredibly useful tool for adjusting the power of optical components and performing system tests.

A fiber optic attenuator is a passive device used to decrease the power level of an image signal. Too much light can saturate a fiber optic receiver, which in order to reduce the power of illumination and achieve optimum system performance a fiber optic attenuator would need to be used. In general, multimode systems do not require attenuators because multimode sources, even VCSELs, rarely have enough power to saturate the receiver. Instead, it is necessary to use fiber optic attenuators for the purpose of balancing optical power during transport in single mode systems, especially long haul DWDM networks.

Variable Collimator Optical Attenuator Features

  • Insertion Loss < -.8dB - 40dB
  • Multimode, OM2, 50/125
  • 2 Meters, 850nm - 1310nm

Optical variable attenuator, or variable optical attenuator (VOA), generally uses a variable neutral density filter. VOA is generally used for testing and measurement, but it is also widely adopted in Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) for equalizing the light power among different channels. It has the advantage of being stable, wavelength sensitive, mode insensitive and providing a wide dynamic range.

In fact, there are two types of optical variable attenuators: stepwise and continuously variable attenuators. In known steps, such as 0.1dB, 0.5dB or 1dB, stepwise variable attenuators can change signal attenuation. Continuously variable optical attenuators can provide a precise level of attenuation through flexible adjustment. This enables operators to adapt their attenuators quickly and precisely so as to make the necessary adjustments, which do not interrupt the operation of the circuit.
