The weak point of other fusion splice-on connectors occurs when the shock absorber of the stop ring is sleeved by heat shrink after fusion splicing. Typically, if the ferrule fiber takes on a load toward the primary fiber, the fiber can be bent and possibly cause a disconnection of the fiber. To resolve this problem, Fibertronics, Inc. fiber optic splice on connector uses the ferrule to disperse this transformation and prevent fiber optic disconnect.

The Splice-On Connector provides fast, reliable fusion splicing connectivity to the local area networks and offers flexibility for repair or restoration of connections. These devices provide secure connectivity options in applications where fusion can be chosen, e.g. for reflectance sensitive applications.

A splice-on connector uses a fusion splicer to permanently join a fiber stub inside the connector with a fiber cable. It is protected from the boot of a connector, thereby reducing the requirement to use traditional pigtails because they are embedded in it. Using the current cable management features on the patch panel, it is possible to terminate a connector directly. The need for an external cable holder, a tray or any other auxiliary device has been eliminated by the splice on connector assemblies which encloses and protects the cables. A splice-on connector gives installers greater flexibility by combining the fusion with the splicing of the field installable connector. Splice-On connectors offer a more robust performance as compared to a mechanical splice.
