A fixed level of attenuation can be obtained by replacing the existing fiber optic bulkhead adapter at the patch panel with this FC bulkhead female to female fiber optic attenuator.

Too much light can saturate a fiber optic receiver, which in order to reduce the power of illumination and achieve optimum system performance a fiber optic attenuator would need to be used. In general, multimode systems do not require attenuators because multimode sources, even VCSELs, rarely have enough power to saturate the receiver. Instead, it is necessary to use fiber optic attenuators for the purpose of balancing optical power during transport in single mode systems, especially long haul DWDM networks.

This FC bulkhead female to female fiber optic attenuator utilizes a doped optical fiber filter to achieve attenuation. The female-to-female type enables them to accept standard FC type fiber optic connectors on each side of the bulkhead.

Bulkhead female to female fiber optic attenuators are ideal for use in fiber optic patch panels, instrument front panels and other applications that require a fixed level of attenuation and easy connectivity.

Bulkhead Female to Female Fiber Optic Attenuator Features

  • Highly reliable physical contact connectors
  • Accurate attenuation
  • Accepts Standard FC Connectors
  • Attenuating material-Ion Doped Fiber

Bulkhead attenuators are fixed attenuators, meaning they are designed to retain the same level of attenuation in optical fiber as measured in dB. Usually there is a male connector on one side that allows the fiber attenuator to be connected directly to the receiver equipment or adapter in the patch panel, and on the other side there is a female fiber optic adapter that allows the patch cord to be connected. The optical attenuators, which can be used as an adapter and an attenuator at the same time, are also female to female. They are used in telecommunications networks, optical fiber test facilities, local area network LANs and CATV systems.
